Björn Ulvaeus ABBA conference Stockholm

stockholm 2018

where inspiration begins

105 speakers, 42 talks, over 2000 guests, 14 workshops, 19 mentoring sessions, almost 500 litres of coffee consumed, 600 packets of Smörrebröd eaten, 919 chairs sat on, 22,000 ants present (thanks to one unforgettable art installation), 20 startup cities discussed, 25 hours+ of conversation. But the amount of fun we had at last week’s me Convention? Totally unquantifiable.

The 2018 me Convention took place in Stockholm from September 4-6 at the stunning Nacka Strandsmässan, a 19th century building which once acted as a car factory. We heard from 100+ speakers about recent developments regarding five essential topics: New Society, New Leadership, New Economies, New Creativity, and New Bionomics.

exploration day

discovering stockholm’s art, food & tech scenes

The Exploration Day started with one idea: there’s no one Stockholm. Yes, it has a world-class art, design and architecture scene. Sure, its startup ecosystem is second to none in Europe. And a resounding yes, yes, yes — it’s a great city to explore, with British magazine Monocle pronouncing it one of their top 10 most liveable cities internationally in 2016. So how do we condense all of the dazzling multiplicity of Stockholm into just a day? That’s easy. On September 4th, we met at the Mercedes Pop-Up Store and hopped on our roaming tour buses to explore Stockholm before diving into the conference the next day.

the city: stockholm’s best hidden events with me Convention’s urban hotspots

We explored the most picturesque corners of the city and uncovered Urban Hotspots which are satellite locations that offer me Convention attendees access to concerts, performances, exhibitions, and restaurants.

The Art & Architecture route felt essential: what other city has a dedicated Beauty Council in place to ensure architectural developments are up to scratch? And which other

Stockholm also acts as Sweden’s tech capital. Business Insider calls the ecosystem “ragingly successful,” the city is home to gaming giants like King, Mojang and Paradox Interactive and the think tank Milken Institute declared Stockholm the second best performing city in Europe in terms of tech. Our Startup Scene route, curated by Startup Guide gave all participants an insight into some of the most innovative workplaces and companies in town.

sessions: inspiration

Our conference days included: film premieres, concerts and themed routes across Stockholm. But ultimately, those cool extras were just that — extras. Which is why if you injected us with truth serum and demanded we play favorites, we’d have to confess - albeit under duress - that we were most excited about our conference days with Mike Shinoda (multi-platinum Grammy Award winning rock band Linkin Park) Stephanie Lampkin (founder & CEO blendoor), Renata Avila (Director, smart citizen foundation and international human rights lawyer) and Björn Ulvaeus (songwriter, producer and member of ABBA).

workshops: learning by doing

At the me Convention, we worship at the altar of learning by doing. Acquiring new skills can be a lot like learning a foreign language — you can know the grammar inside out, but if you’re too nervous to order a coffee in your new tongue, what’s the point?

work out to wake up with yoga icon & entrepreneur Adriene Mishler

With 3.8 million subscribers on YouTube, Adriene requires very little introduction. In this workshop we explored how using the body as a focus of meditation can have positive knock-on effects to mental wellbeing, the decisions we make – both daily and life-changing – and their outcomes.

#storytelling on instagram – the exploration of the new visual language with the kissinger twins:

In this workshop our participants explored the narrative possibilities of the the largest visual social media platform with the Webby Award-winning director duo.

sensing sweet: from disgusting to delicious with emilie baltz

Using research in the sensory sciences, food technologist Emilie Baltz led a workshop that explores how we construct the flavor of sweet.

Baltz’s food experiences have been documented by The New York Times and she has spoken at Cannes Lions Festival and TED-X Omaha.

mentor sessions: their undivided attention + your ambitions

Mentor sessions offer one-on-one coaching with professionals from diverse industries.

anita fontaine + geoffrey lillemon

Anita Fontaine and Geoffrey Lillemon joined W+K Amsterdam as creative directors in 2016. Prior to W+K, they ran their own digital boutique agency Champagne Valentine where they created backdrops for pop mega-stars like Miley Cyrus, directed films for fashion houses like Louis Vuitton, worked with Google and startups in Silicon Valley, started VFX companies and exhibited VR games in museums. In their mentor session they showed you how to make a living as your most creative self.

felix jaehn

Aged just 20 years old, Felix became a household name in 2015 thanks to his remix of Omi’s “Cheerleader,” which topped the charts in Germany, the United Kingdom, France, South Africa and more. All participants dreaming of making it big in EDM had the chance make use of the mentor session with Felix Jähn.

evening events: party like a rockstar

When the talks finish for the evening, we just get started. The evening program of the 2018 me Convention in Stockholm took place across the city. No matter whether a photography museum, a stunning old theatre and an elegant design space – there was an after-party location for every taste:

  • september 4: a picturesque opening at Fotografiska
  • september 5: a night full of surprises at the Södra Teatern
  • september 6: Closing Party at the Mercedes PopUp Store
