The Philharmonia will present it’s latest VR film inside the VR Sound Stage. Beethoven’s Fifth will be shown on 5th & 6th September. This Raindance Award-winning project was commissioned by Google Daydream in partnership with NASA, and directed by Jessica Brillhart, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the launch of the Voyager spacecraft. Voyager 1 was launched in September 1977. In 2012 it became the first human-made object to leave our solar system, and it is still traveling today. Mounted to the spacecraft is a gold-plated phonograph record, featuring images, recorded greetings, and the Philharmonia Orchestra playing the first movement of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. This eight-minute experience cuts together scenes from interstellar space, imagining where Voyager 1 is traveling now, with footage of Salonen conducting the Philharmonia in the same work.

How does an arrow poison frog perceive its surroundings? What does it feel like to be a caiman, floating motionlessly in the water and lurking for prey? Or to fly as a harpy through the densely overgrown treetops of the rainforest? The interactive virtual reality installation »Inside Tumucumaque« allows us to take on the role of the inhabitants of the Amazon rainforest and to discover the unique ecosystem of the Tumucumaque nature reserve in northeastern Brazil from the perspective of the animals living there.
With the help of ultraviolet color spectra, movements in super slow motion, visualizations of echo sounder locations and infrared night vision and spatial 3D sound, the perception of animals is interpreted as a sensual experience comprehensible for the human perception system.

Blockchain is predicted to be the next big disrupter of business and society since the launch of the internet. Whenever there is a transaction between two people or companies, blockchain can be used to improve the speed and security of that transaction. Blockchain may also be the key to solving some of the World’s toughest humanitarian challenges. In emerging economies, blockchain is being used to assign transparent value to plastic waste items, allowing individuals and families to earn money by collecting and recycling. Once accumulated, the digital tokens, hosted on blockchain, can be exchanged for food, water, phone credit and many other goods, while avoiding corruption issues that so often blight cash-based schemes.

    workshop

The beauty of the digital age is the proliferation of people coming together around shared interests. Starting a subreddit thread enables us to convene around anything from the newest Air Jordans to Democratic Socialism. Yet there is a downside to our connections and communication becoming increasingly ephemeral and mediated by devices: we are isolated and perpetually distracted.

How do we move past the paradox of being more connected and more alone? How do we move past online-only conversations to create meaningful, enduring communities?
The rise in festivals, meet-up groups, bespoke experiences and innovative experiential marketing indicate that coming together and being together are key to building strong communities from what starts online. Meeting in person emboldens personal identification with a cause, and tightens bonds within the group, but how do you support that authentically?

Join this workshop to explore successful examples of live experiences that gathered and solidified people around a concept or cause, and develop the skills you need to plan and pitch a live experience with the goal of building and strengthening community. Please come prepared with an idea of what community you want to build, whether it is centered around ideology and identity, an artist, or even product/brand.

Every new visual medium needs time to evolve and create its own language. Since its inception in 2010, Instagram has developed into something more significant than a platform for sharing images of cappuccinos and selfies. It has become a narrative tool for a new wave of filmmakers and storytellers, a platform for unique and complex stories that take advantage of the app’s possibilities and limitations. How can we utilize a medium which is both a tool for production and distribution and the largest visual social media platform? And last but not least - it’s not just about Instagram but rather how we re-frame the art of storytelling & cinema into the ever-changing new technological landscape.

Today marks a unique time in which there is a confluence of smart design marrying form and function. This intersection can offer critical solutions to challenges posed by the explosive growth of an aging global population. The need for positive mobility solutions is growing exponentially, and we are seeing an increasing demand for beautifully designed, yet safe, products that will unlock human potential and improve one's quality of life. In reversing the “medicalization of age”, mobility and lifestyles need to move from the model of stigmatized medical devices, to tools that are embraced and open up options and lifestyles. Glasses were for people who couldn’t see (four eyes)- now everyone wants some Warbys- essentially moving from from resist to request. Attend this session to discover how good design can aid and support human mobility, and learn about how innovative products and services can be aspirational when messaged properly.

Off the record: The entrepreneurial story of a world-famous DJ & producer
At the age of 19, Felix Jaehn produced his first hits – on a laptop, in a little village on the Baltic Sea. And to start with he worked just as independently on the distribution of his music as he did on the music itself: purely digital and via blogs and communities instead of big labels, publishers or radio stations – until his first big global success with Cheerleader. To date he has sold 7.5 million singles, has been streamed more than a billion times and won many gold and platinum awards. With this mentor session, Felix offers a unique and personal look behind the scenes. Where is the line between artist and entrepreneur? What does success mean and how should it be handled? Why can social media be both a curse and a blessing for a successful artist?

Invisible to the naked eye, bacteria can be grown and painted on petri dishes, creating vibrant patterns and unique shapes. And because bacteria are living, dynamic and have their own desires independent of the artist, the result is a surprising and rewarding collaborative artwork, co-created by human artist and the bacterial paint.

Many of us are aware of the pressing socio-environmental issues that we face on Earth; climate change, population growth, overexploitation of non-renewable resources, wanton pollution, overpopulation, mass extinction of species and the effects of conflict. The list goes on. Most of us are also aware that more of us now live in urban areas than outside them. Fewer of us are as fully aware of the nature of our dependence on nature and in many cases, (in keeping with the theory of Biophilia) the adverse effects of depriving us of exposure to it, and the benefits of immersion in it. We are also living in a time of rapidly emerging and astonishing technologies and approaching the era of the Smart City. This talk explores what Mike Wells hopes will be the future of city design, a future based on whole-system thinking combining nature and technology to create sustainable, beautiful, multifunctional and life-affirming urban realm that has place not just for mankind but for many other species.

AI and other advances are fueling a surge in the use of facial recognition. Law-enforcement officials are identifying criminals by matching images from security cameras, or from social media posts, to large databases of facial images. Meanwhile, officials are starting to experiment with the use of facial recognition at transportation terminals, and at public events such as sports championships, to identify terrorists or other hostile agents. Advocates say that the technology will improve national security and public safety, but others are concerned that facial recognition will usher in an unprecedented assault on privacy and civil liberties. This workshop investigates a very personal societal issue and a question that unintentionally offends some people: what does it mean to have children in times of climate change and its associated catastrophic risks? It is well documented that having fewer or no children is the most effective way of curbing one’s carbon emissions. Some people act on this information by deciding not to have children due to climate change or fears of bleak prospects for the next generation that sprout from emerging technologies, nuclear threats, and more.
Meanwhile, prominent thinkers like Steven Pinker and the late Hans Rosling use historical data to tell us that the world is only getting better and that the pessimists are wrong. In this workshop, we will explore these tensions and take a tour through some of the debates and ethical questions surrounding the biggest decision a person with reproductive autonomy can make in their connection to our shared uncertain future.

On the whole, we no longer die of infectious disease or starvation, but of the degenerative diseases that come with aging: cancer, diabetes, heart disease, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Because we look to treat symptoms and not the cause of the diseases, we so far have had little success. The reason seems to be that these illnesses arise with, and because of, damage to the cell incurred with time, which is what we call aging. At the cellular level, aging consists of molecular defects that arise progressively as the by-products of cell metabolism and replication.
Two methods are under development to do this: gene therapy and cell therapy. The first edits a gene or inserts a new gene to replace a faulty or missing one. The second replaces missing or damaged cells with stem cells. In 2015 Liz Parrish underwent gene therapy to address two aspects of cell aging: short telomeres and muscle loss, via the injection (using a viral vectors) of the gene for telomerase and a myostatin inhibitor gene, two treatments that had proven successful in animal models. Attend this session to hear her story, and how BioViva aims to make these therapies available and affordable to those who need them.

In 1990, from 6 million kilometers away, Voyager 1 took a snapshot of our existence in the universe: a pale blue dot. In it, we saw the loneliness and impermanence of our species, a realization that continues to sustain a thriving, resonating call for the future.
This sense of profound isolation has always shaped our perception of our planetary condition and our understanding of ourselves. What are the human experiences and perceptions of our planetary condition in relation to the vastness? Situated between the intimate, personal longing towards an outer space of the commons and the industrialized space exploration programs that administer access, Xin Liu will argue for the irreplaceability of an immediate, heartfelt presence of being in outer space on the grounds of human experience and connection. At me convention this year, discover a series of in-space and on-earth explorations that align and reposition human experiences with(in) imperceptible and incessant cosmic existences.

Nature has an amazing variety of solutions for vision in store, and many animals outperform humans when it comes to color vision, movement detection or visual acuity; some possess additional visual percepts which are unknown to us, like UV vision or the detection of the polarization patterns of the sky. Honeybees, with their mini-brains, calculate depth from motion signals and use automatic flight control, some geckos, bees and butterflies can see colors at night and a shrimp developed the multispectral scanning system. Some of nature's solutions have even inspired inventions in computer and robotic vision. What other lessons does nature hold for tech developers? As we edge closer to an era of seamlessly integrated, immersive media, our built environments begin to take on a new presence: that of “intelligent” space.
Enabled and informed by an emerging set of sensory media – spatial sound, haptic feedback, mixed reality, bio-reactive wearables, among others – radical new possibilities become available for interaction between a room and the people within it. An exciting new field beckons: defining the syntactic and semantic contours of an emerging cultural continuum. What new types of exchange and awareness might open up in such an environment? Can we expand our scope of sensing and sensitivity, of meaningful experience, beyond the bounds of current linguistic forms?
Using an 8.1 spatial sound system, 4DSOUND’s John Connell and Paul Oomen will host a workshop outlining the potential of spatial sound and listening in informing what we term spatial memetics: a mutable syntax of intelligent, mediated space.

The rise of digital empires is accelerating the process of digital colonization. From global content moderation to overnight algorithm variation affecting news streams, Big Tech is taking full control of critical aspects of our personal and social lives and directly affecting our collective autonomy, media independence and, more generally, democracy and freedom. Digital colonialism is the new deployment of a quasi-imperial power over a vast number of people, without their explicit consent, manifested in rules, designs, languages, cultures and belief systems by a vastly dominant power. This talk will address the problem and propose some ideas to rethink our relationship with technology, decentralize to the extent possible and to build the social, regulatory and technical safeguards to preserve democracy.
